Happy New: Coral Reefs Recovering

Published by Laura Gozzi

Hawaiian reefs are showing steady resilience.

Delicate coral reefs in Hawaii, damaged by fishing and pollution, have started to show signs of recovery – by slowly turning red. The scarlet colour commonly associated with corals can disappear when reefs are put under severe environmental changes – a process called “bleaching”, which turns coral pale or white.

Corals provide habitats for a quarter of all marine life

Scientists in Hawaii have recently started noticing that thousands of coral colonies have maintained or regained their vibrant colours, showing steady resilience. Corals provide habitats for a quarter of all marine life and protect coastlines from storms, so underwater photographers won’t be the only ones to rejoice.
