If countries were looking for an environmental role model, Costa Rica is it. The Latin American country is now officially half trees, having reversed decades of deforestation and doubled the rainforest area in the space of 30 years.

Eliminate fossil fuels by 2050

Costa Rica already sources much of its electricity from renewable sources, and the next goal is to eliminate fossil fuels by 2050, mostly by revamping the heavily polluting transportation system. Can it do it? We should all hope so. If the small, politically stable state can’t pull the objective off in the next 30 years, it’s unlikely any other country will be able to.
